Size 23 x 40 x 125mm. Part seasoned. Very popular with knifemakers for its unusual graining.

Botanical Name: Cordia gerascanthus. Country of origin: Mexico. SG.96. A small tree rarely growing more than 0.3m diameter. Heartwood is yellow-brown with a green tinge when first cut, darkening on exposure to a mild brown with black lines and markings. Straight to irregular grain, fine even texture, the wood has a slight oily feel to the touch. Dries slowly with little degrade if care is taken. Saws moderately well but tends to dull the cutting edges quickly. Can be bought to a very good finish. Used for high quality knife handles.

Other names: Bombay rosewood, Bombay blackwood.

Deep purple brown to reddish brown, more or less striped. Rather hard and heavy.

The same tree as Sonokeling rosewood but having darker and heavier wood due to different growth conditions.

Indian rosewood is historically one of the main rosewoods of commerce and was traded alongside Brazilian rosewood for hundreds of years. Felling is now strictly controlled by the Indian government and logs are sold by auction to a small number of government approved bidders only. Export is also stritctly controlled by the Indian government to reinforce the value and precious nature of this timber so that it will remain available for a long time into the future.

Guibourtia coleosperma Air dried.

Not a true Rosewood (Dalbegia) but a member of the Bubinga family (but not CITES Listed) and just maybe, the most beautitiful blocks we have.

The colour varies from reddish brown to pink with lighter streaks, some yellow to pale straw colour. Some blanks are reminiscent of Brazilian Tulip. Polishes up really well.

It works just like Bubinga, slightly hard but crisp and takes abrasives well.

Has distinct Cocobolo look, with deep purple brown, reddish brown, sometimes greenish brown, more or less striped, hard and heavy.

Regularly available and reasonably priced rosewood from plantations established by the Dutch on the island of Java.

Sonokeling is the same tree as Indian rosewood but differs, presumably because of the plantation origins and to some extent climate, in having a broader colour range and a little less hardness and density.

Will make a stunning knifehandle or scales.
