Regularly available and reasonably priced rosewood from plantations established by the Dutch on the island of Java.

The burr grows underground as a root burl and is dug out rather than felled. The colour is rich golded brown to orange red. The grain is contorted, hard and full of knots resulting in a beautiful mottled birds eye figure.
The timber produces some beautiful patterns, taking an excellent finish.

Price: £18.00 (Including VAT at 20%)

Quantity:

Dimensions: 9 x 125 x 38mm.

Dalbergia variabilis. Tulip is also called: jacaranda, bahia rosewood, pink wood, jacaranda Rosa, and bois de rose. This rosewood is a small tree (shrub) that averages 2-10" in diameter without sapwood. Most billets are 3-5" in diameter as this is a rare species and is only found in small 1" or 2" lumber or veneer and is not plentiful in either. There is a prominent heart defect that prevents many clean boards over 4-5" in width. In fact the average width is only 2-3/8". Weighing about 60 pounds per cubic foot, the wood is dense and takes a very nice polish. Used for fine articles including knife handles, turning, jewelry boxes, and pens. Brazil

As used for the Seven Oaks Knife. See http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk/SevenOaksMain.html.

Lignum Vitae Scales Palo Santo EW-Lig-Sc

Lignum Vitae Scales

Palo Santo EW-Lig-Sc

Price: £10.00 (Including VAT at 20%)

Quantity:

Sold in Pairs

Size: 124mm x 40mm x 8mm. Part seasoned.

Botanical name: Bulnesia sarmienti

Origin: Paraguay
Although this wood has been used for generations for the same purposes as the genuine lignum vitaes (timber from the genus guiaicum) it has become a more important choice recently because very little of the Guaiacum lignum vitae is currently being exported.

Greenish brown to brown with a tight and pronounced interlocked grain, very dense, waxy with self lubricating qualities, hard wearing in almost all the contexts in which lignum vitae has traditionally been used and smells wonderful when being worked.
